How to Sell Your Car Privately on the Isle of Man (2026 Guide)

ListIt guide | Updated October 2026
On the Island, word gets round fast, and a well-presented car with a clear advert sells quickly. Here's how to price it, advertise it, deal with buyers safely, and do the change of ownership properly, so you're not left paying tax on a car you've sold.
1. Get the car ready
- Clean it inside and out and clear out your things. It is the cheapest way to add value.
- Gather the paperwork: the Manx registration certificate, service history, receipts for recent work and both keys.
- Fix the small things buyers notice straight away: bulbs, wipers, warning lights.
2. Price it from real adverts
Look up the same make, model and year on ListIt Cars For Sale and compare mileage and condition. Island prices can differ from UK prices, so compare with Manx adverts first. Price a little above where you want to end up, to leave room for an offer.
3. Write an advert that sells
- Photos: 10 to 20 clear daylight pictures. Front, back, both sides, seats, dashboard showing the mileage, boot, tyres and any marks.
- Title: year, make, model and engine, for example "2018 Ford Fiesta 1.0 Zetec".
- Description: mileage, owners, service history, what's recently been done, tax date and why you're selling.
- Place your ad on ListIt. Enter the registration and most of the details fill in for you.
4. Deal with buyers safely
- Keep messages on ListIt until you've met. Be wary of anyone who wants to move to WhatsApp or email straight away, says they're off-Island and will send a courier or agent, or wants to pay before seeing the car.
- Viewings in daylight, at home or a busy place, with someone with you. Check the buyer's licence and insurance before a test drive, and go along.
- Payment: hand over the keys only when a bank transfer has actually cleared in your account, or you've been paid in cash and checked it. Never accept an overpayment or "send back the difference".
5. Change of ownership: don't skip this
- Seller and buyer must both notify Vehicle Licensing that the car has changed hands. Complete the sale section on the back of the registration certificate together and hand it in at any Post Office, or post it to the Licensing Office. The buyer keeps the rest of the certificate to apply for their new one.
- If you don't notify the sale, you can stay liable for the vehicle, including taxing it.
- Give the buyer the service history and both keys, plus a simple receipt with the date, price, registration and both names. Then cancel your insurance.
