Bringing a Car from the UK to the Isle of Man: Registration and Testing

ListIt guide | Updated October 2026

Plenty of Manx drivers buy their next car in the UK. It can widen your choice, but there are a few Isle of Man steps to get right before the car is legal on Manx roads. Here's the whole process, and how to decide whether it's worth it compared with buying on the Island.

Before you buy

Because the Isle of Man and the UK share a customs and VAT area, you don't pay import duty or import VAT when bringing a car over from the UK. The costs are the travel, registration and any test.

Is it over 5 years old?

Registering it on the Island

  1. Bring the car over and book the test straight away if it needs one.
  2. Register and license it: initial registration and licensing can be done at a Post Office. Take the V5C, proof of insurance, your ID and address, and the test certificate if one was needed.
  3. Fit Manx plates with the new registration number. Driving a resident's car around the Island on UK plates is something the police do check for.
  4. Keep the paperwork safe. You'll need the new Manx registration certificate when you sell the car on.

Rules and fees can change, so check the current guidance on gov.im vehicle registration before you travel.

Worth it?

Once you add the boat, a day or two away and the registration, a UK car has to be noticeably cheaper to make sense. And with an Island car you can see it, test-drive it and collect it the same day. Compare first on ListIt Cars For Sale, the Isle of Man's own marketplace, with stock from Manx dealers and private sellers.

Watch out for scams

If a seller "in the UK" wants a deposit before you've seen the car, offers to ship it to you, or asks to move to WhatsApp or email straight away, walk away. Real sellers are happy for you to view first.
