Beware of Rogue Traders: Protect Yourself and Your Neighbours

Reports have recently been received of tradespeople calling uninvited at homes across the Isle of Man, offering services such as roofing, driveway repairs, gardening, or other maintenance work.
If someone turns up at your door unexpectedly offering to carry out work, be cautious. Cold calling is illegal in the Isle of Man, and some traders travelling from the UK or Ireland may not have the necessary authority to work on the Island. In some cases, these individuals may use misleading or high-pressure tactics to obtain money from homeowners.
How to Stay Safe
To help protect yourself and those around you, remember these simple steps:
- ✅ Always ask for identification and check who you are dealing with.
- ❌ Never let unexpected callers into your home.
- ❌ Avoid agreeing to work offered by someone who knocks on your door.
- ❌ Don't be pressured into making quick decisions.
- ❌ Never hand over large sums of cash before work has been completed.
Many rogue traders only stay on the Island for a short time before moving on, making it difficult for authorities to trace them.
Think About Vulnerable Friends and Family
Not everyone will see warnings like this online. If you have elderly relatives, neighbours, or friends who may be more vulnerable, take a few minutes to let them know. A simple phone call or conversation could prevent someone from becoming the next victim.
If You've Been Approached
If you've been contacted by a doorstep trader or think you may have already dealt with one, report it as soon as possible.
You can contact the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading on +44 1624 686500 or email iomfairtrading@gov.im. Alternatively, you can contact Police Headquarters on 01624 631212.
Staying informed and looking out for one another helps keep our communities safer. If in doubt, don't answer the door, don't agree to work on the spot, and always seek advice before making any payment.
